DAVIS, Calif. - Playing for the first time in 2019, Sacramento State dropped a pair of beach volleyball matches at UC Davis on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The Hornets lost the first match, 4-1, and dropped the nightcap by a 3-2 score.

Sacramento State was playing without the services of Sarah Davis, who suffered an injury in Thursday's practice. Davis would have teamed with Mikaela Nocetti at No. 1 doubles for the Hornets, and all five of the Hornets' doubles lineups had to be changed after the injury. Sacramento State played today's matches with three freshman, four sophomores, a junior and two seniors.

True freshmen Kayla Subbert, Paige Calvin and McKenna Smith each played their first collegiate beach competitions.

The losses dropped the Hornets to 0-2 on the young season while UC Davis improved to 2-0. The Aggies are a first-year beach program and debuted their brand new beach volleyball courts on campus. Both teams are part of the Big West Conference for beach volleyball.

The doubles team of Ashtin Olin and Skyler Takeda won both of their matches today, winning in straight sets in each. That included a 21-19, 21-19 victory at No. 3 in the first match of the day, followed by a 21-18, 21-16 win at No. 2 in the nightcap.

The second match of the day could have gone either way as there were an abundance of close scores, including three matches lasting three sets. The Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Subbert/Calvin won at No. 5 by a 10-21, 21-16, 15-9 score. The Aggies tied things at No. 1 when Smith and Sarah Falk lost at No. 4 by a 5-21, 21-17, 15-5 score.

Olin and Takeda gave Sacramento State a 2-1 lead with their win at No. 2, but the Aggies won at Nos. 1 and 3 to secure the 3-2 victory. Macey Hayden and Nocetti lost at No. 1 by a 22-20, 21-14 score, and Cianna Andrews and Paige Swinney fell at No. 3, 21-8, 17-21, 15-11.

In the opening match of the doubleheader, Takeda/Olin provided the Hornets' lone win at No. 3. Calvin/Subbert lost at No. 5 in three sets (15-13 in the 3rd), Falk/Smith fell at No. 4 (21-13, 28-26), Swinney/Andrews at No. 2 (21-11, 21-17) and Nocetti/Hayden at No. 1 (21-16, 21-19).

Sacramento State, which began its seventh season of beach volleyball today, returns to action on Friday, March 8, when the team hosts San Jose State at 2 p.m.
