ROWING WRAPS UP FIRST DAY OF WIRA CHAMPIONSHIP, FOUR BOATS IN SUNDAY’S GRAND FINALS


Saturday's results/Sunday's lane assignments

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and two varsity fours competed on the first day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship on Saturday at Lake Natoma.

Of those five Hornet boats, four will compete in a grand final tomorrow. The day was highlighted by both the second varsity eight and novice eight placing first in their respective heats.

Sacramento State's varsity eight finished third in this morning's heat with a time of 6:53.36, and will be slotted into its grand final tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. against Stanford Lightweights, San Diego State, San Diego, Loyola Marymount and Portland. The Hornets will row out of Lane 5.

Sacramento State's second varsity eight posted a first place time of 6:53.71 in its morning heat. The Hornets qualified for the grand final tomorrow at 9:40 a.m. when the team will race in the first lane against San Diego State, Loyola Marymount, Stanford Lightweights, San Diego and Portland.

The Hornets' novice eight also placed first in its heat with a time of 7:36.11, and will race out of Lane 1 in tomorrow's grand final at 10:10 a.m. against UC Irvine, UC San Diego, UC Davis, Humboldt State and Pacific Lutheran.

Sacramento State's varsity four finished fifth in its prelim with a time of 8:11.10, and will race tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. in the grand final. The Hornets will compete against San Diego State, Loyola Marymount, San Diego, Portland, Stanford Lightweights and Saint Mary's.

The second varsity four finished third in its Open B Final with a time of 8:08.94, finishing behind San Diego State and Seattle U, and placing ahead of San Diego and Saint Mary's.
