VARSITY EIGHT BEATS TULSA AND MIAMI, HIGHLIGHTING FINAL DAY OF THE LAKE NATOMA INVITATIONAL

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- The Hornets raced a varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, third varsity eight and novice eight on the final day of the Lake Natoma Rowing Invitational on Sunday morning at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.

Highlighting the day was the Hornet varsity eight placing first in its race with a time of 6:44.71, finishing ahead of Tulsa (6:45.46) and Miami (6:49.14). It was Tulsa that finished second as a team at last year's American Athletic Conference Championship, and placed second in the varsity eight race at that regatta (the Hornets were sixth). It also marked the first win over Tulsa's varsity eight since both schools became members of the American Athletic Conference during the 2014-15 academic year.

The two-day, nine-team regatta featured a powerhouse lineup that included four teams ranked among the nation's top crews (#2 Cal, #3 Stanford, #6 Brown, #12 USC) in the USRowing/CRCA Coaches top 20 poll. Sacramento State, Gonzaga, Notre Dame, Miami and Tulsa round out the field. The Hornets co-hosted the event with Cal.

All boats were placed into groups, and competed against different teams in each round of racing. There was a morning session, and afternoon session on Saturday, and the regatta concluded this morning. Most of the races featured three teams competing against each other.

The Hornets' second varsity eight placed second in its race with a time of 6:49.87, trailing Tulsa (6:48.73) and finishing ahead of Miami (7:03.87).

Sacramento State's varsity four (7:46.13) placed third in its race, and the Hornets' third varsity eight (7:30.53) finished fourth and the novice eight (8:25.15) fifth in the third varsity eight grand final.

The Hornets compete again when they host the WIRA Championships on April 27-28.
