ROWING CONCLUDES FINAL DAY OF SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC WITH A VARSITY EIGHT FOURTH PLACE FINISH

San Diego Crew Classic results

SAN DIEGO – Sacramento State competed three boats on the final day of the San Diego Crew Classic, which included the varsity eight finishing fourth, and the novice eight fifth in their respective grand finals on Sunday at Crown Point Shores Park in Mission Bay.

The two-day event began with the Hornets competing four boats in yesterday's heat racing. Both the varsity eight and novice eight qualified for the grand final, the second varsity eight raced in the petite final, and the varsity four qualified for the third-level final. The varsity four concluded its racing yesterday with a first place finish in the third final while the other three boats competed today.

After finishing second in its heat yesterday, the Hornets' varsity eight finished fourth in the grand final with a time of 6:56.19, narrowly finishing out of a medal after falling to third-place San Diego (6:55.86) by less than half a second. Drexel was first in the grand final with a time of 6:48.59, followed by second place Loyola Marymount (6:52.53), third place San Diego and Sacramento State to round out the top four places in the six-boat field.

The Hornet varsity eight was seeking a medal for just the seventh time in program history. That included a silver at last year's event.

Sacramento State's second varsity eight placed fourth in its heat yesterday, and competed in this morning's petite final. The Hornets placed second in the petite final with a time of 7:04.07, trailing only Oklahoma's winning time of 6:58.95, but finishing ahead of San Diego State, Gonzaga, Tennessee and Loyola Marymount.

The novice eight was automatically slotted into today's grand final after placing sixth in its heat yesterday. The Hornets improved upon their heat showing with a fifth place finish in the grand final. Sacramento State's time of 7:28.34 was faster than Wisconsin and UC San Diego, but trailed Texas (6:59.36), Washington, UCLA and Oklahoma, respectively.
