SAN DIEGO – The Sacramento State women's varsity eight placed second in its heat on Saturday, highlighting the Hornets' first day at the 46th annual San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay. The Hornets' varsity eight will join the novice eight in tomorrow's grand finals while the second varsity eight will compete in tomorrow's petite final.
The two-day event, which is held at Crown Point Shores, began with the Hornets competing four boats in today's heat racing. Three of the four boats will race again tomorrow in their respective final while the varsity four finished first in its third-level final today.
Sacramento State's varsity eight finished second in its heat with a time of 6:49.37, and will be one of six boats competing in the Grand Final on Sunday at 10 a.m. The Hornets will race against Georgetown, San Diego, Loyola Marymount, Drexel and Seattle Pacific. It marks the third straight year the Hornets have qualified for the event's grand final. In today's heat, Sacramento State's time trailed Georgetown (6:47.89), but was faster than Seattle Pacific, Saint Mary's and Fordham.
The Hornets' varsity eight will seek its first San Diego Crew Classic championship since 2000. The boat has medaled six times previously, including a bronze in 2015, 2010 and 2005, a silver in 2018 and 2009, and a gold in 2000.
Sacramento State's second varsity eight placed fourth in its heat with a time of 7:06.86, trailing Washington, UCLA and Tennessee. Sacramento State will compete in tomorrow's petite final at 9:36 a.m. against Loyola Marymount, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Gonzaga and San Diego State.
The novice eight was automatically slotted into tomorrow's grand final at 8:56 a.m. The Hornets' novice eight placed sixth in its heat with a time of 7:37.61, trailing Texas, Washington, UCLA, Oklahoma and Wisconsin, respectively.
The varsity four finished fifth in its heat with a time of 8:18.30, and then finished first in its third-level final with a time of 8:28.64.
