GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four each placed third in their respective races on the second and final day of the Lake Natoma Rowing Invitational on Sunday morning at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.
The two-day, eight-team regatta featured a powerhouse lineup that included three teams ranked among the nation's top 10 crews (#2 Cal, #7 Stanford and #8 Brown) and one receiving votes in the latest CRCA/USRowing Coaches top 20 poll (Notre Dame). Sacramento State, Gonzaga, Alabama and San Diego rounded out the field. The Hornets co-hosted the event with Cal.
All boats were placed into groups, and competed against different teams in each of the three rounds of racing. Yesterday there were morning and afternoon sessions, and today marked the final round of racing. Sacramento State competed against Gonzaga, Alabama and San Diego in each of its three races this morning.
Yesterday, of Sacramento State's eight races, the Hornets competed against a nationally ranked opponent in seven of those races.
In today's varsity eight race, the Hornets placed third out of four boats with a time of 7:04.1, finishing just three-tenths of a second behind second-place Alabama (7:03.8). Gonzaga won the race with a 6:56.6, and San Diego was fourth with a time of 7:19.3
In the second varsity eight race, Alabama (7:03.6), Gonzaga (7:04.1), Sacramento State (7:17.3) and San Diego (7:23.4) placed first through fourth, respectively. In the varsity four, Alabama raced to a winning time of 7:33.5, followed by Gonzaga (7:42.1), Sacramento State (7:45.8) and San Diego (8:11.8).

Sacramento State does not compete again until hosting the WIRA Championships on Lake Natoma on April 28-29. The Hornets will then have one more regular season race (May 5 at UC Davis) before competing in the American Athletic Conference Championship in New Jersey on Saturday, May 12.
