Head of the American race results
GOLD RIVER, Calif. --- Highlighted by the Hornets' novice eight placing second in its event, the Sacramento State women's rowing squad began the fall season on Saturday at the Head of the American on Lake Natoma. Today marked the first of two fall regattas as the Hornets return to the water in two weeks for the Head of the Lagoon in Foster City on Nov. 11.
Saturday's racing took place on a three-mile course with a time trial start format. Sacramento State competed one entry in the collegiate novice eight (13-boat field), six entries in the collegiate pair (45-boat field), two entries in the collegiate eight (26-boat field) and one in the collegiate four (19-boat field).
The Hornets' novice eight completed the three-mile course in 20:08.4, which was faster than 11 other crews. In fact, the only boat Sacramento State finished behind was first-place Cal. The Hornets' time was faster than a pair of Saint Mary's entires and Cal Lightweight entries among other crews.
In the Collegiate Eight, Sacramento State's A boat finished 14th with a time of 17:56.8, and the Hornets' B boat was 17th at 18:43.9. Twelve of the crews that finished ahead of Sacramento State's A boat were entries from Pac-12 schools as well as a crew from both Gonzaga and San Diego. Cal's A boat won the race with a time of 16:29.1.
In the Collegiate Four, Sacramento State placed 10th out of 19 bats with a time of 21:48.9. Cal's B boat placed first in the race with a time of 19:56.2.
in the pairs, the Hornets' A boat finished 30th with a time of 21:04.5, followed by the B boat (35th, 21:13.4), C boat (37th, 21:22.9), D boat (41st, 22:25.0), E boat (42nd, 22:26.8) and F entry (44th, 23:01.1).

After the Head of the Lagoon in two weeks, the Hornets do not compete again until they host the Sacramento State Invitational on Lake Natoma on March 10. A total of seven schools will be competing at the event.
