SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State rowing's incoming freshman Mikaela Smyth was one of 14 women selected to compete for the Canadian Junior National Team at next month's CanAmMex Regatta.
The team is made up of rowers under the age of 19, and come from different rowing clubs across Canada. The CanAmMex Regatta will take place July 7-8 at Elk Lake in Victoria, British Columbia, with the competition hosted by Victoria City Rowing Club.
A 5-foot-11 native of Victoria, BC, Smyth signed a National Letter of Intent in April and will begin her first semester at Sacramento State in the fall. She will become the first Sacramento State rower to compete at the CanAmMex Regatta, which brings together junior competitors from the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Smyth competes for the Gorge Narrows Rowing Club, and survived four days of racing tryouts to make the Junior National Team. She will compete in the eight event at the CanAmMex.
Last month, Sacramento State completed its season with a third place finish (out of seven teams) at the American Athletic Conference Championship. The Hornets finished ahead of San Diego State, UConn, Temple and SMU.
