ROWING’S VARSITY EIGHT ADVANCES TO SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC GRAND FINAL

SAN DIEGO – The Sacramento State women's varsity eight posted the third fastest time in its heat during the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic Saturday morning at Crown Point Shores Park in Mission Bay. With the third-place finish, the boat advanced to Sunday morning's Cal Cup grand final.

The Hornets will have an opportunity to capture their first Cal Cup championship since 2000. Six crews from the Cal Cup division will race in tomorrow's grand final.

In tomorrow morning's grand final, which takes place at 11 a.m., the Hornets' top boat will face Kansas State, Iowa, Saint Mary's, British Columbia and Victoria. Sacramento State's time in this morning's heat was 7:06.20, which trailed both Victoria (6:59.72) and Kansas State (7:05.68), but was faster than crews from Portland, San Diego State, St. Joseph's and Loyola. Places 4-6 in both heats qualified for tomorrow's petite final.

Sacramento State's second varsity eight placed fifth in a powerhouse-packed heat with a time of 6:58.24, which trailed crews from USC, Wisconsin, Iowa and Miami. The Hornets returned later in the day to win their third-level final with a time of 7:23.35, beating crews from Tulsa, San Diego State, Saint Mary's and Loyola.

Sacramento State's novice eight placed fifth in its heat with a time of 7:21.57, and later finished third in the petite final with a time of 7:46.53. That time trailed Texas (7:37.99) and British Columbia (7:38.80), but was ahead of fourth-place UC Santa Barbara (7:55.44).

The Hornets' varsity four finished seventh in its heat with a time of 7:50.59, and did not qualify for a final. The varsity four's heat includes crews from USC, UCLA, Iowa, Texas, Gonzaga and San Diego State.
