CURRENT ROWER SMITH, FORMER ROWER PIVONKA FARE WELL AT SUMMER REGATTAS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State senior rower Jessica Smith, and former Hornet Sarah Pivonka each fared well at an assortment of summer regattas, including the USRowing Club National Championships and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.

Both competed for the Vesper Boat Club in Philadelphia, and were Hornet teammates from 2010-12.

Pivonka, who rowed at Sacramento State from 2008-12, took home at least one gold medal from four different summer regattas, including three golds at both the USRowing Club National Championships and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. In fact, she racked up a combined 12 medals during the summer, including eight golds and four silvers. At Club Nationals, she piled up golds in the senior lightweight single, intermediate lightweight single and intermediate lightweight double. At Henley, she was part of the gold-medal winning senior lightweight eight, senior lightweight double and senior lightweight quad crews.

Pivonka has now accumulated a combined 19 medals at Club Nationals and the Henley Regatta since 2010. She moved to Philadelphia in March, and is now rowing year-round for the Vesper Boat Club's Elite Racing Team.

Smith is entering her fourth season with Sacramento State in 2013-14, and competed with boats at both Club Nationals and the Henley Regatta. The Bakersfield, Calif., native won a gold in the five seat with the Under 23 women's eight at the Henley Regatta while also competing with the Senior Four and the Under 23 Women's Four at the event. Smith, who won a pair of medals at the 2012 Club Nationals, competed at the regatta again in 2013 with the senior four and intermediate pair entries.

Smith is one of just a handful of rowers in school history to finish the 2,000-meter ergometer test in under seven minutes (6:59.8), and has competed with the varsity eight each of the last two seasons. Over the summer, she was also one of six Hornets to receive the National Scholar-Athlete Award, given to rowers with a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average.

The USRowing Club National Championships took place July 10-14 on Cooper River in Camden, N.J., and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta was Aug. 4-11 in St. Catharines, Ontario.
