The Sacramento State rowing program is looking for walk-on athletes for the 2013-14 season. Interested students can attend an informational meeting with the coaching staff at the Athletics Center on Thursday, Sept. 5, or Wednesday, Sept. 11. Both will take place at 7 p.m., and its only necessary to attend one of the meetings.
The Athletics Center is located on the J Street side of campus, and can be found on the campus map by clicking here (this meeting is not at the Well).
No prior rowing experience is necessary to join the team. All expenses are covered by the athletics department and outstanding athletes can even earn scholarships. New rowers should ideally have prior athletic experience in another sport and enjoy working hard in a team environment. All student-athletes must be full-time undergraduates and meet certain academic eligibility requirements set by the NCAA.
Walk-on athletes in their first year (known as novices) train as a group in a program specifically designed for those without any knowledge of the sport of rowing. Novices have a storied tradition of not only contributing, but excelling on the Hornet rowing team since the program joined the athletics department in 1995. In fact, over half of the team's roster is comprised of athletes who took their first strokes at Sacramento State.
This year, the rowing program will become a member of Conference USA, which also includes seven members of the SEC and Big 12 Conferences. We will compete for the conference title against Texas, Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Kansas as well as the other four members of the conference.
The Hornets train and compete at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center, which is widely recognized as the premier rowing venue in the country. The Aquatic Center has hosted numerous regional and national events, including the 1997, 1999, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2011 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships.
