Rowing's Varsity Eight Finishes First in the San Deigo Crew Classic Petite Final

SAN DIEGO - The Sacramento State women's varsity eight placed first in the San Diego Crew Classic's women's collegiate varsity petite final Sunday morning at Crown Point Shores Park in Mission Bay.

Sacramento State placed fourth in its heat yesterday to advance to the petite final, and was slotted into the first lane of this morning's race.

The Hornets' 2,000-meter winning time of 6:58.50 was faster than crews from Old Dominion (6:59.43), St. Joseph's (7:04.92), SMU (7:07.41), Kansas State (7:09.43), San Diego State (7:15.47) and Villanova (7:23.28). Sacramento State narrowly missed advancing to the grand final and a chance to win the Cal Cup after getting edged by less than a second by third-place Saint Mary's in yesterday's heat. Had the Hornet varsity eight finished third, that would have qualified the boat for the grand final.

Sacramento State's second varsity eight and novice eight also advanced to their petite finals, with the JV8 finishing fifth, and the novice eight finishing sixth in their respective races. The second varsity eight posted a time of 7:02.62, finishing behind crews from Washington State, Iowa, Duke and San Diego.

The Hornet novice eight posted a time of 7:16.59 in a powerhouse-packed petite final that included crews from Texas, Washington State and USC.

Sacramento State is idle next week, and returns to the water to host the Lake Natoma Invitational on April 20-21. The Hornets will be competing among a star-studded field of crews that includes Cal, Stanford, USC, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Kansas, Tulsa and Washington State. Six of those crews are currently ranked in the CRCA/USRowing Coaches top 20 poll, including second-ranked Cal, No. 5 Stanford, No. 6 USC, No. 13 Notre Dame, No. 14 Wisconsin and No. 19 Washington State. Sacramento State, Kansas and Tulsa are the only crews competing at the event not currently ranked in the top 25.
