ROWING’S VARSITY EIGHT PLACES THIRD IN ITS HEAT, ADVANCES TO TOMORROW’S PETITE FINAL

SAN DIEGO – The Sacramento State women's varsity eight posted the third fastest time in its heat during the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic Saturday morning at Crown Point Shores Park in Mission Bay. With the third place finish, the boat advanced to Sunday morning's petite final.

The team, however, will miss out on the grand final and the opportunity to capture its first Cal Cup championship since 2000.

In tomorrow morning's petite final, which takes place at 8:40 a.m., the Hornets' top boat will face Kansas State, Gonzaga, Saint Mary's, Western Washington and Grand Valley. The Hornets' time of 7:00.69 trailed Oklahoma (6:50.73) and Tulsa (6:57.08), but was faster than crews from Western Washington, UC Davis, SMU and Villanova. The top two teams in each of the three varsity eight heats advanced to the grand final, and the third and fourth place teams advanced to the petite final. The remaining boats advanced to the third-level final.

Racing among a powerhouse-packed field in its heat, Sacramento State's second varsity eight placed seventh in its heat, and did not qualify for a final. UCLA (6:46.11), Cal (6:53.64), Washington State (6:56.40), Oklahoma State (6:58.37), Iowa (7:02.59) and Alabama (7:10.43) all finished ahead of Sacramento State's time of 7:12.90.

Sacramento State's novice eight placed fourth in its heat with a time of 7:25.13, and advanced to the petite final. In the heat, the Hornets' time trailed Minnesota (7:08.77), Oklahoma (7:11.60) and Stanford (7:24.44), but finished ahead of Orange Coast College, San Diego and UC Irvine. In the petite final, Sacramento State posted a seventh-place finishing time of 7:27.52, trailing crews from Texas, Oregon State, USC, Kansas State and Stanford.

In their varsity four heat, the Hornets finished with a sixth-place time of 8:03.06. Washington State, USC, Virginia, Oregon State and Duke finished in places one through five, respectively, followed by Sacramento State and Alabama. With the sixth-place finish, the boat advanced to the third-level final where it placed sixth with a time of 7:59.38.
