Dad Vail Results
PHILADELPHIA - The Sacramento State women's varsity eight placed second in its heat during the first day of the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta Friday afternoon on the Schuylkill River. With the second-place finish, the Hornets advanced to Saturday morning's semifinals.
Held annually since 1953 in Philadelphia, the Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States and includes over 3,500 student-athletes from up to 120 colleges and universities in North America and Canada. The regatta is held on Philadelphia's National Race Course on the Schuylkill River.
Last year, the Hornets placed fifth in the heavyweight eight grand final after winning the championship for the second time in school history in 2010.
Today, Sacramento State competed in the sixth heat of the Women's Varsity Heavyweight Eight competition, which saw Old Dominion finish with a 2,000-meter time of 6:48.36. The Hornets' second-place time of 6:51.68 bettered George Mason (6:53.41), San Diego State (6:54.78), Jacksonville (7:09.42) and William & Mary (7:19.08).
With the second-place showing, Sacramento State's top boat advances to the semifinals where it will compete tomorrow at 7:43 a.m. PDT against Temple, Saint Joseph's, Grand Valley, San Diego State and Middlebury. San Diego State and Middlebury advanced to the semifinals with top-two finishes in their respective repechage races while the other boats gained automatic entry into the semis bases on their heat performances.
The top two boats from the regatta's three semifinals will advance to Saturday's grand final at 3:20 p.m. PDT.
ESPN3 will begin airing each of the regatta's finals tomorrow at 10 a.m. PDT. The broadcast of the finals will include two camera boats catching the action from the Schuylkill River. The package will also include a number of cameras to capture various angles throughout the race including a finish line camera to catch any close finishes. Also included will be slow-motion replays along with pre-produced race packages.
The Hornets are competing in the Dad Vail Regatta for the seventh time in 10 years. At last year's Dad Vail, the team's varsity eight placed first in its heat, second in the semifinals and fifth in the grand final.
