NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – The Sacramento State women's rowing team placed fifth out of 14 entries in the Women's Novice Eight Final at the 23rd-annual Newport Autumn Rowing Festival Sunday afternoon at the Newport Aquatic Center.

The Hornets only competed a novice eight in this year's regatta. Sacramento State's novice finished the 2.7-mile course (4,400 meters) with a fifth-place time of 17:13.89, one spot ahead of Stanford's novice crew (17:23.72). The top four places were secured by UCLA (16:28.89), USC (16:45.06), San Diego (16:48.86) and San Diego State (17:05.37).

The Newport Autumn Rowing Festival marks the second and final regatta of the fall season for Sacramento State. After a scrimmage against Cal on Feb. 26, the Hornets open the spring season on March 12 when the team hosts the Sacramento State Invitational on Lake Natoma.
