ROWING VICTORIOUS IN FOUR RACES AT THE SEASON-OPENING SACRAMENTO STATE INVITATIONAL

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's women's varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four all won handily in their respective races Saturday morning at the Sacramento State Rowing Invitational on Lake Natoma. The regatta marked the spring's season opener for Sacramento State.

Along with the Hornets, the Sacramento State Invitational included crews from Humboldt State, Saint Mary's, Cal, Sonoma State, Santa Clara, Mills College, UC San Diego, Pacific and Cal Maritime.

The Hornets competed in seven races during the day, and each of the first-place boats won by more than three seconds. Of the entries that didn't place first, each of those boats finished in the top three, including the second varsity four (second place), cox4 (second place) and novice four (third place). Each of the high finishes came despite a number of Sacramento State rowers doubling up and competing in two different races. That includes a pair of freshmen racing with both the varsity eight and varsity four, one of which was a pure novice in Julia Lathrop.

"Overall, I felt we had a productive day, and it was a good start to the season," Sacramento State ninth-year head coach Mike Connors said. "Many of our young rowers did a good job and got some valuable experience by competing in two races."

In the varsity eight competition, Sacramento State finished with a 2,000-meter winning time of 6:53.7, which was more than 12 seconds faster than every other team in the race. Saint Mary's finished second with a time of 7:06.2, and Humboldt State (7:12.9) rounded out the top three in the seven-boat field.

In the second varsity eight competition, the Hornets' winning time of 6:57.5 was 22 seconds faster than every other crew. In fact, that time was nearly 12 seconds faster than last year's season-opening time of 7:05.3 for Sacramento State's second varsity eight. The four-boat field was rounded out by Saint Mary's second-place time of 7:19.5, followed by Humboldt State (7:22.8) and UC San Diego (7:49.3).

In the novice eight competition, Sacramento State's time of 7:20.9 blew the field away, as Humboldt State (7:40.1) and Saint Mary's (8:09.2) rounded out the top three finishers in the seven-bat race.

The varsity four posted a winning tie of 7:41.9, followed by Saint Mary's (7:45.1), Sonoma State (8:10.2), Humboldt State (8:15.0) and UC San Diego (8:22.4).

Complete results from each of the women's competitions as well as lineups can be found below.

Sacramento State returns to action on Saturday, March 19, when the team hosts San Diego State. Racing begins at 8 a.m.
