ROWING FINISHES FIRST IN ITS HEAT, ADVANCES TO DAD VAIL REGATTA SEMIS

PHILADELPHIA - The Sacramento State women's varsity eight began its Dad Vail title defense in impressive fashion, taking first place in its heat during the first day of the regatta Friday morning on the Schuylkill River.

Held annually since 1953 in Philadelphia, the Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States and includes colleges and Universities from the United States and Canada. Over 100 schools and more than 3,000 student-athletes are competing in this week's event.

Last year, the Hornets won the heavyweight eight title for the second time in school history, and the team will look to add another trophy to the mantel tomorrow when the semifinals and grand final take place.

In this morning's heat, Sacramento State's time of 6:53.25 bested Fordham (6:56.44), George Mason (6:59.02), Loyola (7:18.66), William & Mary (7:36.21) and Villanova (7:37.64).

With the first-place showing, the Hornets' top boat advances to the semifinals where it will compete tomorrow morning at 7:25 a.m. PDT against Purdue, Drexel, Bucknell and two other boats from the repecharge. The top two boats from each of the regatta's three semifinals will advance to the grand final at 1:13 p.m. PDT.

ESPN3 will begin airing each of the regatta's finals tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. PDT. The broadcast of the finals will include two camera boats catching the action from the Schuylkill River. Seven wired cameras, two wireless cameras in the stands and four 40-to 80-foot booms equipped with cameras will capture the races from every angle possible.

The Hornets are competing in the Dad Vail Regatta for the sixth time in the last nine years. At last year's Dad Vail, the team's varsity eight placed first in its heat and second in its semifinal before winning the grand final.
