ROWING WRAPS UP FIRST DAY OF THE LAKE NATOMA INVITATIONAL

Saturday's Results - pdf

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Sacramento State's women's varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four each competed today in the first day of the Lake Natoma Rowing Invitational at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.

The two-day, nine-team regatta features a powerhouse lineup that includes four nationally ranked teams. Among those schools competing are fourth-ranked Cal, fifth-ranked Stanford, sixth-ranked Brown and ninth-ranked Wisconsin. In addition, three other teams are currently receiving votes, but not ranked in the top 20 comprised of Tennessee, Oregon State and Notre Dame. Central Florida and Sacramento State round out the regatta field of teams. Sacramento State is co-hosting the regatta with Cal.

All nine schools competed in a morning and afternoon session, and were grouped into Sunday's grand finals, petite finals or third-level finals based on today's performance. Nearly every heat during both the morning and afternoon sessions today included three boats.

The varsity eight grand final, tomorrow morning's biggest race in magnitude, will take place at 9:40 a.m., and feature Cal, Stanford and Brown.

Sacramento State's varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four will each race in third-level finals tomorrow morning against Central Florida and Oregon State. The Hornets' varsity four race will take place at 8 a.m., the second varsity eight at 8:30 a.m. and the varsity eight at 9:20 a.m. The Hornets' novice eight will compete in the petite final at 9 a.m. against Central Florida and Cal's B boat.

Sacramento State's varsity eight posted times of 6:56.27 in the morning, and 6:58.13 in the afternoon, but both times were only good enough for third place in the three-team field. The Hornets' second varsity eight posted times of 7:02.36 and 7:14.08, good for third place in both heats. The Hornets' novice eight finished fourth in its lone race with a time of 7:27.44, while the varsity four posted third-place times of 7:29.63 in the morning and 7:54.81 in the afternoon.
