ROWING VICTORIOUS IN SEVEN RACES AT THE SACRAMENTO STATE INVITATIONAL

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's women's varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight, second novice eight, varsity four, second varsity four and novice lightweight four were all winners in their respective races Saturday morning at the Sacramento State Rowing Invitational on Lake Natoma.

Along with the Hornets, the Sacramento State Invitational included crews from Humboldt State, Saint Mary's, Cal, Sonoma State, Santa Clara, Mills College, UC San Diego, Pacific and Cal Maritime.

The Hornets competed in eight races during the day, and the only event the team did not finish first was the novice four (second place). Crews dealt with cross winds and cross-head winds throughout the day that began as mild four mile per hour winds, and increased to 15-20 miles per hour by the end of the day's racing.

"Today was very successful for our crews despite increasingly difficult and windy conditions," Sacramento State head coach Mike Connors said. "Our top two boats (varsity eight and second varsity eight) have worked hard on their starts and sprints, and both did pretty well in those aspects today."

In the varsity eight race, despite battling the wind, Sacramento State finished with a 2,000-meter winning time of 6:56.4, which was more than 23 seconds faster than every other crew in the race. Saint Mary's finished second with a time of 7:19.1 and Sonoma State (7:21.0) rounded out the top three in the seven-boat field. The Hornets' varsity eight improved its dual-meet record this season to 7-0 with the victory.

In the second varsity eight competition, the Hornets were more than 38 seconds faster than any other boat as the team raced to a winning time of 7:02.6. Saint Mary's (7:41.4) and Humboldt State's A boat (7:47.5) rounded out the top three in the six-boat field. The Hornets' second varsity eight is now 4-0 this season in dual-meet action.

In the novice eight competition, Sacramento State's time of 7:23.8 was faster than Humboldt State (7:30.6), UC San Diego (7:56.3) and Pacific (8:53.8). The Hornets' novice eight improved to 3-0 in dual-meet action.

The Hornets' second novice eight (7:45.1), varsity four (8:01.1), second varsity four (8:03.5) and novice lightweight four (8:44.8) were also victorious in their respective events. Complete results from each of the women's competitions as well as lineups can be found below.

Sacramento State is idle next week before returning to the water for the San Diego Crew Classic on March 27-28.
