ROWING TAKES HOME BRONZE MEDAL AT THE SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC

SAN DIEGO – The Sacramento State women's varsity eight won a bronze medal in the San Diego Crew Classic's Cal Cup grand final Sunday morning at Crown Point Shores Park in Mission Bay.

The third-place showing marks the second straight year the Hornets have medaled at the event, and fourth time in school history. That includes a silver medal last year, a bronze in 2005 and a gold in 2000.

Sacramento State's varsity eight, which advanced to the grand final yesterday after winning its heat, finished with a third-place time of 7:11.66 over 2,000 meters, trailing San Diego (7:05.10) and Oklahoma (7:07.29). The six-boat field also included Stanford's Lightweights (7:16.73), St. Joseph's (7:22.05) and Tulsa (7:22.39).

Making its first-ever appearance at the San Diego Crew Classic's grand final, the Hornets' novice eight raced to a fifth-place finish in a powerhouse-packed field. In fact, Sacramento State's time of 7:38.97 was faster than USC's time of 7:39.40. The top four times in the race were recorded by Washington State (7:17.20), UCLA (7:22.45), Oklahoma (7:27.76) and Minnesota (7:28.31). The Hornets' novice eight advanced to the grand final after finishing second in its heat yesterday.

The Hornets' second varsity eight was slotted into the Collegiate JV Petite Final after finishing third in its heat yesterday. Despite not qualifying for the grand final, Sacramento State's JV boat finished first in the petite with a time of 7:03.80. The boat finished ahead of UC Davis (7:04.55), Tulsa (7:11.34), San Diego (7:12.34), SMU (7:13.20) and San Diego State (7:21.49). UC Davis, San Diego and San Diego State are all part of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA), which is the Hornets' conference.

Sacramento State is idle next week before traveling to West Sacramento on Saturday, April 10, to compete against UC Davis for the Jean Runyon Cup.
