WANLESS TO BE HONORED AT TOWSON UNIVERSITY’S HALL OF FAME BANQUET

10/14/2009

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State athletics director Dr. Terry Wanless will be honored along with the 1976 Towson University football squad as a Team of Distinction at Towson’s Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony.

Towson is honoring the entire 1976 team, which finished as the NCAA Div. III runner-up. Wanless was the team’s defensive coordinator that season, and served in that capacity with the University from 1973-86. That season also marked the first NCAA postseason appearance in the history of the program.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as part of a team that had a great year and accomplished something that no other team in Towson University history accomplished,” Wanless said. “This honor is about the team, not any individual player or coach. Its about a collective group that banded together and accomplished a great moment in time for the University.

“I was very fortunate to work with many young and talented people, and for the opportunity to play for a national championship. It was a very special time for me and all of us involved.”

Wanless also served as Towson’s athletics director during the 1983-84 academic year.

He is currently in his eighth year as Sacramento State’s athletics director. The 2008-09 West Region Athletic Director of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision, Wanless has overseen a program that has combined to win 21 conference championships over the last three years.
