FIFTH-YEAR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM GRADUATES ALL 12 RECIPIENTS IN 2008-09

8/5/2009

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State fifth-year scholarship program, now in its sixth year of existence, helped all 12 of this year’s recipients earn degrees during the 2008-09 school year.

Started in 2003-04, during Athletic Director Terry Wanless’ second year at the helm, the fifth-year scholarship program has now graduated 78 of the 81 student-athletes that have been in the program (96.29 percent).

"We are very pleased with the academic progress of our athletic program," Sacramento State Director of Athletics Terry Wanless said. "The fifth-year scholarship program demonstrates a commitment by both the University and the student-athlete to fulfill the mission of the department, which is to provide a quality athletic and academic experience to every member of the Hornet program."

The most recent class of graduates is comprised of David Flores
of baseball; Phillip Perry, Brett Shelton, Brent Webber and Jeremiah Mareko of football; Teri Ann Caoagan and Amy Tompkins of softball; Meghyn Cox and Ashley Loucks of rowing; Lindsay Haupt of volleyball; Emily Longcrier of women's golf; and Lori Vaught of track and field.

To be eligible for a fifth-year scholarship, a student-athlete must have exhausted his/her eligibility and be on pace to graduate within the next academic year.
