HOWARD, GAMBOA, BORISOVA, SCHLOREDT AND OWENS RECEIVE END OF THE YEAR STUDENT-ATHLETE AWARDS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Seniors Sarah Howard (women’s soccer) and Juan Gamboa (football) were selected as Sacramento State’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award winners, while Adam Owens (men’s soccer), Marina Borisova (gymnastics) and Jamie Schloredt (softball) each received the Student-Athlete of the Year Award at a ceremony held Thursday evening on the Sacramento State campus.

The Scholar-Athlete Award is given to the Sacramento State male and female senior with the highest grade point average at the institution.

The Student-Athlete of the Year award is given to one male and female student-athlete that has reached senior status in eligibility, and is voted on by the entire Sacramento State coaching staff. Both Borisova and Schloredt received the same amount of votes and are the co-Female Student-Athletes of the Year.

A native of Chino, Calif., Howard earned all-Big Sky Conference accolades for the fourth time in her career, being named honorable mention three times after earning second-team honors in 2007. A standout midfielder. Howard finished her career tied for the most games played in school history, seeing action in all 80 matches the Hornets played during her four year career. She finished her career with nine goals and seven assists, totaling 25 points. In the class room, Howard posted a 4.0 gpa in the fall of 2008, and has an overall 3.84 gpa in communication studies.

Gamboa has been a key contributor to Hornet football over the last four years. A four-year starter at place kicker, he leaves Sacramento State as the fifth-leading scorer in school history. He led the team in scoring each of his first three seasons and was a two-time all-Big Sky choice. In the classroom, Gamboa was a four-time Big Sky all-academic selection and earned his bachelor’s degree in December. The San Jose, Calif., native also earned All-America honors by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a senior based on his performance in the weight room. In the class room, Gamboa posted a 4.0 gpa in the fall of 2008, and has an overall 3.63 gpa in communication studies.

Borisova became just the third Hornet gymnast to compete at the NCAA regional four times when she advanced as an all-arounder following her senior season. Borisova burst onto the scene as a freshman, earned Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year honors after winning the individual title on floor. She also tied for sixth in the all-around and was fifth on floor at the NCAA West Regional that season. She defended her floor title the following year and helped Sacramento State win back-to-back WAC titles. A native of Kalingrad, Russia, Borisova moved to Sacramento with her family in 2002. She became a United States citizen in 2008 and has been a stellar student during her career. She will graduate with a degree in child development at the end of the spring semester.

With one week remaining in the regular season, Schloredt is currently batting .383 with 10 home runs, 35 RBIs, a .664 slugging percentage and a .477 on-base percentage. That includes a league-best .550 batting average against Pacific Coast Softball Conference competition. A three-time first team all-conference award winner, including the PCSC Player of the Year last season, Schloredt has established herself as one of the top players in program history. She has started 200 games during her four seasons, and has set Sacramento State career records with a .371 batting average, 35 home runs, 147 RBIs and 101 walks. Also the conference’s all-time leader in batting average and RBIs, Jamie became the highest drafted player in Sacramento State history when she was selected as the 14th overall pick by the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch League.

Owens, a native of Carmichael, Calif., was a three-time all-MPSF selection as a defender, and was a first team honoree during his sophomore and junior seasons. A two-year team captain, Owens is the school’s career leader in matches played, seeing the pitch in 74 matches for the Green and Gold while making 60 starts. One of the hardest tacklers in school history from the center back position, he finished his career with a goal and two assists for four career points.
