FOY, PARKES, NICHOLS AND LUTES RECEIVE END OF THE YEAR SENIOR STUDENT-ATHLETE AWARDS

5/8/2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Seniors Warwick Foy (tennis) and Jennifer Parkes (golf) were selected as the Sacramento State’s Senior Scholar-Athlete Award winners, while David Nichols (track and field) and Kristin Lutes (volleyball) each received the Senior Student-Athlete Award at a ceremony last week on the Sacramento State campus.

The Senior Scholar-Athlete Award is given to the Sacramento State male and female senior with the highest grade point average at the institution. The Senior Student-Athlete of the Year award, also given to one male and female student-athlete that has reached senior status in eligibility, is voted on by the entire Sacramento State coaching staff.

Foy has been a four-year of the men’s tennis team and helped lead Sacramento State to a 20-5 overall record, a 7-0 mark in the Big Sky Conference, and the squad’s first Big Sky Tournament title since the 2003 season. The Wellington, New Zealand, native posted a 16-8 dual-match singles record, primarily as the team’s No. 4 player. In addition, he went 18-5 in doubles play, primarily with teammate Ramon Perez at No. 3. A finance major with a 3.62 gpa, Foy is 52-39 in singles, and 48-32 in doubles during his four-year career. Foy and the men’s tennis team will travel to Stillwater, Okla., to take on Oklahoma State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament this Saturday, May 12.

Parkes has been a four-year member of the women’s golf team. This year, she helped lead the Hornets to their first Big Sky Conference title in school history. At the meet, Sacramento State set the conference record for lowest team score and finished 25 strokes ahead of the closest team. Parkes is also a member of the department’s student-athlete advisory council and has maintained a 3.51 gpa while majoring in liberal studies. Parkes and the women’s golf team will be competing at the NCAA West Regional in St. George, Utah, this Thursday-Saturday, May 10-12.

A two-time All-American, Nichols will leave Sacramento State as one of the most decorated athletes in school history. As a sophomore in 2005, he finished ninth at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in the shot put and improved that finish last season where he placed sixth overall. Nichols has also won four Big Sky Conference titles and will look to add a fifth this weekend as Sacramento State travels to Pocatello, Idaho, for the Big Sky outdoor championships. During his four years, he has set both the Sacramento State indoor and outdoor records in the shot put and also eclipsed the Big Sky indoor mark earlier this season. His attempt to become a three-time All-American will come in early June as Sacramento State hosts the 2007 Div. I Track and Field Championships.

Lutes was a four-year member of the volleyball team and capped her impressive career by being named all-Pacific Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. A three-time Big Sky Conference Libero of the Year and two-time all-conference selection, Lutes helped lead the Hornets to Big Sky championship all four years of her career. The Kent, Wash., native is the Big Sky Conference and Sacramento State program career record holder with 2,355 digs. This past year, she ranked 10th in the nation with an average of 6.24 digs per game and her 768 digs set a Sacramento State and Big Sky single-season record. The team captain was one of just four non Pac-10 Conference student-athletes named all-Pacific Region. Lutes and the volleyball team’s season concluded at the NCAA Tournament, a place Sacramento State has been nine times in the last 10 years.
