TELLEZ BECOMES THIRD MEMBER OF THE 2008-09 MEN'S SOCCER RECRUITING CLASS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State men’s soccer coach Michael Linenberger announced the third student-athlete signee of the team’s 2008-09 recruiting class, 6’1” forward Matthew Tellez from Canyon Country, Calif. He will enroll at the University as a freshman in the fall.
Tellez is currently a senior at Canyon High School in Canyon Country, Calif., where he was a three-year letterwinner for the Cowboys from 2005-07. During his junior season at Canyon, Tellez was an all-CIF South Section Division II selection after posting 19 goals and 11 assists. He was named first team all-Santa Clarita Valley by the The Signal as well, after leading his team to the CIF South Section Division II playoffs, scoring a goal and adding an assist in a 3-2 first round overtime loss.
Tellez competed at the club level for the Los Angeles Futbol Club (LAFC), based in La Cañada, Calif. He competed in the highly competitive Coast Soccer League Premier League as a member of LAFC. Tellez was part of the club’s 2007 US Club Soccer Champions Cup Title, leading his U17 team to a first place finish at the prestigious tournament held at Disney World’s Wide World of Sports Complex by scoring three goals. He also collected seven goals in the Nomads College Showcase in 2007, leading LAFC to the tournament title.
“We’re very excited about bringing Matt into our program,” head coach Michael Linenberger said. “When you look at his athletic pedigree, we think he is one of the top recruits we’ve ever had. He is one of the top goal scorers in one of the elite soccer leagues in the country. Matt will come in as a striker, and has a chance to make an immediate impact as a freshman in the MPSF.”
He joins Sacramento native Matthew Foy, a forward, and goalkeeper Bryan Oliver, a native of Rocklin, who signed earlier in the year.
The Hornets open the 2008 fall season with an exhibition game against Stanford on Aug. 23, before opening the season at home against Cal State Bakersfield on Aug. 29.
