MEN’S TENNIS BEATS NORTHERN ARIZONA, REMAINS PERFECT IN THE BIG SKY

Freshman Tom Miller posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory in his match at No. 6 singles

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Sacramento State remained unbeaten in Big Sky Conference play with a 4-2 victory over Northern Arizona in a men’s tennis match Wednesday afternoon at the two-court NAU Fieldhouse.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 4-10 overall and 3-0 in the Big Sky. Dating back to the 2010 season, Sacramento State has now won 22 straight matches against league opponents. In fact, the team’s last loss to a Big Sky foe came on Jan. 21, 2010, against NAU in Flagstaff. The Lumberjacks dropped to 4-9 and 1-3 with the loss.

Singles play was contested first with the initial team to reach four points declared the winner. Doubles play was not contested due to time constraints.

Sacramento State senior Javier Millan (6-3, 6-1 at No. 2), and freshmen Marek Marksoo (6-4, 6-2 at No. 4), Roy Brandys (4-6, 7-6, 7-6 at No. 5) and Tom Miller (6-4, 6-0 at No. 6) were each victorious in singles play. Brandys saved a pair of match points during the second set of his match against Robert Martin before eventually winning. Marksoo improved his record to a team-best 9-3 in singles play.

Northern Arizona’s victories came at No. 1 where Robin Pezzutto defeated Aliaksandr Malko (6-1, 6-2), and at No. 3 where Dominic Bermudez beat Sean Kolar (6-3, 6-4).

Today wrapped up a grueling stretch that saw the Hornets play four matches away from home over a five-day stretch. The team returns to action for just its second home match of the season on March 27 against league opponent Eastern Washington.
