ARLINGTON, Texas -- UT Arlington’s Mindaugas Celedinas, Soren Goritzka, Yauheni Yakauleu, David Subirats and Stefan Williams each posted victories in singles play to lead the Mavericks to a 6-1 win over Sacramento State in a non-conference men’s tennis match Sunday morning at the UTA Tennis Center.
The loss dropped Sacramento State to 3-9 as the rebuilding Hornets have now started four freshmen in the team’s singles lineup every match this season. UT Arlington improved to 4-8 with the victory.
The Hornets’ lone point in the match came from freshman Marek Marksoo, who won his match at No. 4 by a 6-4, 6-4 score over Nicolas Moreno. Marksoo continues to be Sacramento State’s most consistent player as the Tallinn, Estonia, native is now a team-best 7-3 in singles play this year.
Sacramento State won at No. 3 doubles as the tandem of Aliaksandr Malko and Roy Brandys won their match by an 8-3 score. However, UT Arlington won doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 2 to pick up the doubles point.
Hornet freshman Roy Brandys kept his singles match close at No. 5 before falling to Subirats, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8.
Today marked the second contest of a stretch that will see the Hornets play four times in five days, including a matchup with Drake in Arlington on Tuesday before heading to Flagstaff for a match with Big Sky Conference-foe Northern Arizona on Wednesday.
