DENVER, Colo. -- Utah swept all three doubles matches and each of the six singles matches to post a 7-0 victory over Sacramento State in a non-conference, neutral-site men’s tennis match Saturday afternoon at the Gates Tennis Center.
The Utes improved to 8-4 with the victory while the Hornets dropped to 3-6. For the ninth consecutive match, and every matchup this year, Sacramento State used five freshmen today.
Utah opened things by winning all three doubles matchups to pick up the doubles point. From there, Utah got victories in singles play from Benito Suriano, Dmytro Mamedov, Slim Hamza, Rafael Davidian, Ace Matias and Alejandro Medinilla.
The Hornets’ Aliaksandr Malko narrowly lost his match at No. 1 to Suriano, falling by a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-8 score. At No. 3, Sean Kolar battled a hip injury throughout before falling, 6-3, 6-3 to Hamza. Sacramento State’s Marek Marksoo, who entered the day with a five-match singles winning streak, fell to Matias, 6-3 and 4-1 before retiring in the second set with a groin injury.
Javier Millan (6-3, 6-2 at No. 2), Roy Brandys (6-2, 6-2 at No. 4) and Jonathan Hultkrantz (6-3, 6-3 at No. 6) also lost for the Hornets. Kolar, Brandys, Marksoo and Hultkrantz are all freshmen, and the team also uses freshman Tom Miller during doubles play.
Sacramento State returns to action tomorrow for its third match in as many days when the team faces Denver at 10 a.m. PT.
