With the victory, the Hornets have now defeated their cross-Causeway rivals six straight times dating back to 2007. That includes five straight wins that have come by 6-1 scores. Sacramento State, which improved to 2-4 on the young season, is now 15-6 against the Aggies during the program’s Div. I era (1992-pres.). UC Davis dropped to 3-5 this season with the loss.
The Hornets were able to win convincingly despite playing five freshmen, including four in the team’s singles lineup. Kolar (No. 3 singles), Brandys (No. 4), Marksoo (No. 5) and Hultkrantz (No. 6) are each freshmen, as is Tom Miller who played No. 2 doubles.
After dropping the doubles point to trail, 1-0, the Hornets won all six singles matches, four of which came in straight sets. That included a convincing 6-0, 6-3 win by Millan at the No. 2 spot. Brandys (6-1, 6-2), Marksoo (6-4, 6-1) and Hultkrantz (7-5, 6-2) also won in straight sets. Hultkrantz erased a 5-3 deficit in the first set before posting his straight set win.
Malko saved a match point at No. 1 singles before beating Toki Sherbakov, 5-7, 7-6 (8), and 10-5 in the super tiebreaker. Kolar won his match by a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 score.
Marksoo won for the fourth straight time in singles play and is now a team-best 5-1 this year (all at the No. 5 position).
The victory completed a marathon weekend for Sacramento State in which the team played three matches over a two-day span, including a win against Big Sky Conference foe Weber State yesterday. The Hornets will now take 11 days off before returning to action for a match at Nevada on March 2.
