MEN’S TENNIS WINS ROAD MATCH OVER UC DAVIS BY A 6-1 SCORE

DAVIS, Calif. -- Sacramento State’s Kiryl Harbatsiuk, Jason Smith, Aliaksandr Malko, Josh Lorentzen and Joe DeGuzman were each victorious in singles play to lead the Hornets to a 6-1 victory over UC Davis in a non-conference men’s tennis match Sunday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.

The Hornets moved their record to 4-5 overall this season, and beat UC Davis for the fifth straight time dating back to 2007. All nine of Sacramento State’s matches have come on the road this season as the Hornets will finally play at home a week from today (Feb. 27) against Saint Mary’s.

With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 1-5.

The Hornets’ doubles tandems of Harbatsiuk/Marko Starcevic (8-3), Malko/Javier Millan (8-3) and Smith/Lorentzen (8-4) each won in easy fashion to give Sacramento State the doubles point.

In singles play, the Hornets decided to rest Starcevic, who had flu-like symptoms. Starcevic plays at No. 3 singles and Sacramento State still won despite moving four different players up one spot in the singles lineup. That included DeGuzman, who was playing a singles match for the first time this spring.

Harbatsiuk had little trouble at No. 1, defeating Nick Lopez by a 6-2, 6-1 score, and winning his seventh straight match. Smith (6-4, 6-4 at No. 2) and Malko (6-1, 6-1 at No. 3) also won in straight sets, giving the Hornets a 4-0 lead in the match. Playing at No. 5 for the first time all year, Lorentzen won, 5-7, 6-3 and 10-6 in the super tiebreaker while DeGuzman won at No. 6 by a 1-6, 6-3, 10-2 score. Millan lost his match at No. 4 to Kyle Miller, 7-5, 6-4.

Prior to Sacramento State’s match against Saint Mary’s on Sunday, the Hornets will travel to San Luis Obispo to take on Cal Poly on Saturday at 11 a.m.
