STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford’s Bradley Klahn, Ryan Thacher, Alex Clayton, Denis Lin, Greg Hirshman and Matt Kandath each won in straight sets to lead the eighth-ranked Cardinal to a 7-0 victory over Sacramento State in a non-conference men’s tennis match Tuesday afternoon at the Taube Family Stadium.
The match was the season opener for Stanford while Sacramento State dropped to 0-2. The Hornets opened the year last Saturday with a 6-1 loss at second-ranked USC.
Each of Stanford’s top three players are currently ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, including Klahn (No. 15), Thacher (No. 41) and Clayton (No. 61).
Klahn had little trouble with Sacramento State senior Kiryl Harbatsiuk at No. 1 singles. Harbatsiuk, who is ranked one spot below Klahn in the ITA rankings at No. 16, lost by a 6-3, 6-0 score. Thacher beat junior Jason Smith (6-1, 7-5) at No. 2, Clayton defeated senior Marko Starcevic (6-1, 6-2), Lin knocked off sophomore Aliaksandr Malko (6-1, 6-3), Hirshman beat junior Javier Millan (6-2, 6-1) and Kandath defeated freshman Josh Lorentzen (6-3, 6-0).
The Cardinal also swept each of the three doubles matches handily.
The Hornets return to action for a rare doubleheader on Sunday, Jan. 30. The team begins that day with a match at UC Davis at 11 a.m., followed by the home opener against Nevada at 5 p.m. The match against Nevada will be played at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center.
