MEN’S TENNIS PULLS OFF DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF WEBER STATE AND IDAHO STATE

1/30/2010

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State men’s tennis team pulled off a rare doubleheader sweep today, knocking off a pair of Big Sky Conference foes in Weber State and Idaho State. The Hornets had little trouble dispatching of both teams, winning by 7-0 scores in each match.

Because of heavy rains that hit the Sacramento area overnight, the Hornets played Weber State this morning at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center in Gold River, before shifting back to their outdoor facility (Rio Del Oro Racquet Club) for this afternoon’s Idaho State match.

Whether playing indoors or outdoors, it didn’t make much difference today as Sacramento State had little trouble with both teams. The Hornets, who are the four-time defending Big Sky regular season champions, improved to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big Sky with the victories. Sacramento State had its 24-match Big Sky regular-season unbeaten streak snapped last week when it lost on the road to Northern Arizona.

Weber State dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference, while Idaho State fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big Sky.

Sacramento State dropped just one set during the singles portion of both matches as Anton StryhasKiryl HarbatsiukJason SmithHolden Ching and Tim Lantin each went 2-0 today. Marko Starcevic and Jimmy Roberts both went 1-0.

Smith combined to drop just five games the entire day, winning by scores of 6-2, 6-2 (against Weber State), and 6-0, 6-1 (against Idaho State). Harbatsiuk blanked Idaho State’s Danel Barrenechea, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.

Sacramento State combined to win five of the six doubles matches, including the tandem of Smith and Ching posting a 2-0 record. Complete results from both matches can be found below the story.

The Hornets wrap up their two-day, three-match homestand tomorrow afternoon against UC Davis at 1 p.m. The match will be played at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club. If there is rain, the match will likely be moved to the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center. Tomorrow’s matchup is worth five points in the Causeway Cup, the annual all-sports challenge between Sacramento State and UC Davis. The Aggies currently lead this year’s competition, 33.67-32.50.
