HARBATSIUK AND STRYHAS FALL IN QUARTERFINALS, MEN’S TENNIS WRAPS UP PLAY AT REGIONALS

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Sacramento State senior Anton Stryhas and junior Kiryl Harbatsiuk lost their quarterfinal doubles match to Fresno State’s Mirko Zapletal and Taylor Leiby, wrapping up the Hornets’ play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northwest Regional Championship Monday morning.
Hosted by Cal, the ITA Northwest Regional Championship will determine a singles and doubles champion from the ITA Northwest Region. The regional tournament, which began on Friday and runs through Tuesday, consists of a 128-player singles draw and a 64-team doubles draw. Singles and doubles champions from each of the main draws will earn automatic bids into the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held in New Haven, Conn., on Nov. 5-8.
Harbatsiuk and Stryhas, who are ranked 16th in the nation by the ITA and won their first two matches of the tournament after receiving a first-round bye, wrapped up Sacramento State’s play at the tournament. Coincidentally, Zapletal and Leiby will play for the doubles title tomorrow at noon.
The Hornets entered nine players in the singles draw of the event, and eight more in the doubles draw. Harbatsiuk went the furthest of any Hornet in the singles tournament, advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to 15th-ranked Bradley Klahn of Stanford by the score of 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday. Klahn will play for the singles championship tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. Harbatsiuk had defeated opponents from Cal, Stanford and Washington to advance to the quarterfinal round.
Stryhas and sophomore Jason Smith each fell in the round of 16, including a heartbreaking three-set loss suffered by Stryhas to Cal’s Bo Katsarov, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2. Smith defeated opponents from Gonzaga, Cal and Fresno State before falling to Stanford’s Greg Hirshman, 6-4, 6-3.
On the doubles side, the tandem of Ching and Starcevic, currently ranked 47th in the nation by the ITA, advanced to the round of 16 before falling to Cal’s Christoffer Konigsfeldt and Nick Andrews, 8-5. The Hornets’ doubles team of Smith and Roberts advanced to the round of 32 before falling to San Francisco’s Asaf Cohen and Thai Tu.
