STRYHAS AND HARBATSIUK FALL IN THE MAIN DRAW OF THE ITA CHAMPIONSHIPS

TULSA, Okla. - Sacramento State senior Anton Stryhas and junior Kiryl Harbatsiuk were upset by Ohio State’s Matt Allare and Shuhei Uzawa, 8-4, in the first round of the main doubles draw at the ITA All-American Tennis Championships Thursday morning at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Stryhas and Harbatsiuk entered the main draw of the tournament ranked 16th in the nation by the ITA, while Allare and Uzawa are ranked 34th. Stryhas and Harbatsiuk, who became the first Hornet doubles tandem in school history to play in the main draw of the event, received an automatic berth into the tournament and did not have to play in the pre-qualifying or qualifying rounds.

The ITA Championships are widely considered the premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season featuring the top players in Div. I. Stryhas/Harbatsiuk were one of just 32 doubles teams from around the nation to play in the main draw of the tournament.

A school-record tying six Hornets competed in the singles and doubles portion of the tournament over the last six days, and Stryhas and Harbatsiuk were the last Sacramento State players remaining. Yesterday, Hornet sophomore Jason Smith fell one victory shy of reaching the main draw of the singles tournament but fell in the third round of qualifying.

Sacramento State returns to action on Oct. 23 for the first day of the ITA Northwest Regionals in Berkeley.
