RAIN HALTS FINAL TWO MATCHES OF MEN'S TENNIS SEASON OPENER

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Sacramento State men's tennis attempted to open the 2009 dual season against UC Riverside on Friday, but Mother Nature intervened with two matches still to be decided.
At the point play was stopped, UC Riverside held a 3-2 lead, but Hornet junior Anton Stryhas was just one point away from tying the score at 3-3, as he was leading Feliz Macherez at No. 1 singles 6-4, 5-1. The other match being contested, No.3 singles, saw junior Holden Ching trailing a set to Quan Doan, but leading 6-5 in the second set.
There are currently no plans to finish the suspended matches, and the match will not factor into either team's season record.
Before the rains came, the Hornets took the doubles point, taking the matches at both No. 1 and No. 2 positions, with the No. 3 match stopped in an attempt to get play finished prior to the rain. At the No. 1 position, Stryhas and sophomore Kiryl Harbatsiuk, ranked No. 30 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, made quick work of Doan and Macherez, 8-1, while Ching and sophomore Marko Starcevic took down the tandem of Ranier Matias and Austin Andres, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles.
In singles action, the lone point secured by the Hornets before the suspension of play was by Harbatsiuk at No. 2 singles, as the No. 94 singles player in the nation defeated Gorjan Kovacevic in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Sacramento State will try to beat the rain in Southern California on Saturday, January 23, as they are scheduled to take on the USC Trojans at 2:30 p.m.
