MEN’S TENNIS CONCLUDES PLAY AT THE ITA CHAMPIONSHIPS; THREE PLAYERS REACH AT LEAST THE ROUND OF 16

10/20/2008

BERKELEY -- Sacramento State sophomore Kiryl Harbatsiuk’s run at the 2008 Wilson/ITA Northern Cal Men’s Tennis Championships at the Hellman Tennis Complex came to an end today with semifinal losses in both the main singles and doubles tournaments.

In the singles draw, Harbatsiuk was one of just four players remaining from a field of 128 of the top men’s tennis singles players in the ITA Northwest Region. Harbatsiuk, a native of Minsk, Belarus, lost in the semifinal round to No. 1 seed Alex Clayton of Stanford by the score of 6-0, 6-3. Harbatsiuk had won each of his first five singles matches to reach the semifinals.

In addition, Harbatsiuk and teammate Anton Stryhas reached the semifinals of the doubles draw before falling today to No. 1 seed Jeevan Nedunchzhyn and Patrik Fischer of Washington by the score of 8-6. The tandem of Harbatsiuk/Stryhas had beaten doubles teams from Stanford, Fresno State and Washington prior to this afternoon’s loss.

In all, nine Sacramento State players competed at the five-day event, and a school-record three of those players reached at least the Round of 16 in the singles draw. Those players were comprised of Harbatsiuk, Stryhas (lost in the Round of 16) and freshman Jason Smith (lost in the Round of 16). In addition, two doubles teams reached at least the Round of 16, comprised of Stryhas/Harbatsiuk, and sophomore Marko Starcevic and junior Holden Ching (lost in the Round of 16).

Schools represented at the regional championships included Cal (host), Fresno State, Gonzaga, Nevada, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Stanford, UC Davis, and Washington.

Sacramento State has just two tournament remaining on the fall schedule, comprised of the Saint Mary’s Classic in Moraga (Oct. 31-Nov. 2), and the UCSB Classic in Santa Barbara (Nov. 14-16).

Complete singles and doubles results from each of Sacramento State’s players can be found below.
