MEN’S TENNIS IMPROVES TO 4-2 WITH VICTORY OVER PACIFIC
2/24/2008
STOCKTON, Calif. -- Freshman Kiryl Harbatsiuk, sophomore Anton Stryhas and junior Sven-David Rueff each posted singles victories to lead Sacramento State to a 4-3 win over Pacific in a non-conference men’s tennis match Sunday afternoon. Rains forced the match to be played indoors.
With the victory, Sacramento State improved to 4-2 and completed an impressive weekend which saw the team knock off rivals UC Davis (yesterday) and Pacific. The Tigers dropped to 4-3 with the loss.
Sacramento State began the match by winning the doubles point as the No. 1 tandem of Harbatsiuk and Stryhas (8-4) and the No. 3 tandem of Artur Klimenka and Rueff (8-5) were each victorious.
The match took extra long due to the fact the teams were playing at an indoor facility that had only three courts. Pacific was able to take a 2-1 lead in the match after winning at the both the Nos. 3 and 4 spots in the ladder.
However, Sacramento State won the next three matches to ice the win. At No. 1, Harbatsiuk defeated Moritz Starke, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, and Stryhas beat Artem Gramma at No. 2 by the score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Rueff’s victory at No. 5 over Vegerd Veskimagi (6-3, 1-6, 6-3) gave the Hornets the necessary four points for victory. All three Hornet victories in singles play were decided in three sets.
Sacramento State plays four matches next week, beginning with a contest at New Mexico on Wednesday, Feb. 27. The team will then play three times in Las Cruces, N.M., against New Mexico State (Feb. 29), UT Arlington (March 1) and Utah (March 2).
