MEN'S TENNIS BLOWS PAST UC DAVIS, 6-1, IN CAUSEWAY MATCHUP

GOLD RIVER, Calif. — Anton Stryhas, Kiryl Harbatsiuk, Holden Ching, Sven-David Rueff and Artur Klimenka each won their singles and doubles matches to help lead the Sacramento State men’s tennis team to a 6-1 win over UC Davis, Saturday afternoon at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center.
The Hornets improved to 3-2 on the year while the Aggies fell to 6-5. Sacramento State also picked up five points in the 2008 Causeway Cup standings but still trails UCD, 40-20.
The doubles point was awarded to the Hornets after Sacramento State won all three matches. Rueff and Klimenka started things off with an 8-1 win over Kevin Liang and Nic Amaroli at No. 3. The team then clinched the doubles point with an 8-1 at No. 1 from Stryhas and Harbatsiuk over Henri Landes and Justin Garcia. With the doubles point determined the competitive No. 2 match went to a tie-break at 5-5. In the tie-break, Ching and Ronan Conlon defeated Daniel Elefant and Michael Resier, 7-5, to compete the sweep. The Hornet tandem overcame a 5-1 deficit in the tie-break to secure the win.
Sacramento State also had little trouble in singles play as all six matches ended in straight sets. Harbatsiuk defeated Landes, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 for the first point. Klimenka followed with a 6-2, 6-4, victory over Garcia at No. 3. Ching was able to clinch the win after he defeated Nick Lopez, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4, to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead.
Stryhas added on to that margin with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Reiser at No. 2 before the Aggies got on the board with a 6-0, 6-3, win from Tyler Lee over Conlon at No. 6. Rueff closed out the match at No. 5 by downing Elefant, 6-2, 6-2.
Sacramento State will have a quick turn-around as it is scheduled to face Pacific on Sunday, Feb. 24, in Stockton, Calif., at 1 p.m.
