MEN’S TENNIS CRUISES TO 6-1 WIN OVER SAINT MARY’S

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men’s tennis team earned its fourth win in its last five matches with a 6-1 victory over Saint Mary’s, Saturday afternoon at the Natomas Racquet Club.
The Hornets opened the contest by winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. The tandem of Anton Stryhas and Gabriel Loredo combined for an 8-4 win over Adam Fauvre and Alp Ozpinar. The Gaels evened the doubles matches with a win at No. 3 where Andre Sion and Yury Platanov downed Warwick Foy and Ramon Perez, 8-5. Sacramento State clinched the point with an 8-4 win at No. 2 from Xavier Barajas-Smith and Hague Van Dillen.
In singles play, Loredo, Foy and Perez gave the Hornets the match victory with three quick wins. Loredo beat Andrea Zannoni, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 3. Foy defeated Fauvre, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 4, and Perez knocked off Platonov, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 5.
Barajas-Smith made the score, 5-0, in favor of the Hornets with a 7-6 (5), 6-2, win over Joel Kusnierz at No. 1. The Gaels earned their first point of the match at No. 2 where Sion defeated Stryhas in a third-set tie-breaker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. Tim Lantin concluded play with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, win over Achim Christner at No. 6.
Sacramento State is now 5-3 with the win. The Hornets will next travel to both Ogden, Utah, and Pocatello, Idaho, on March 18 to take on Weber State and Idaho State. The match at Weber State will start at 9 a.m. with the ISU match beginning at 4 p.m.
