EUGENE, Ore. — The Sacramento State men’s tennis team opened its spring season with a 5-2 loss to Oregon on Saturday afternoon at Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks improved to 5-2 on the season while the Hornets dropped to 0-1.
Oregon took the first point of the contest, after winning two of the three doubles matches. Geoff Embry and Alexander Cornelissen teamed to beat Xavier Barajas-Smith and Anton Stryhas, 8-5, at No. 1. The Hornets matched the victory at No. 3 with an 8-4 win by Ramon Perez and Warwick Foy over Stephen Wiechert and Mike Myrhed. At No. 2, Marcos Verdasco and Francisco Gallardo downed Gabriel Loredo and Hague Van Dillen, 8-6, to secure the OU win.
In singles play, Embry added to the Ducks’ lead with a 6-1, 6-2, win over Miguel Camino at No. 5. Oregon moved ahead, 3-0, after Eric Pickard downed Van Dillen, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6.
Stryhas picked up the Hornets’ first point with a 6-2, 6-0, win over Gallardo at No. 3. However, Oregon clinched the victory at No. 4 when Myrhed beat Foy, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
The final two matches at the top of the ladder came down to the wire. Cornelissen outlasted Loredo at No. 2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, for the Ducks’ final point. At No. 1, Barajas-Smith defeated Verdasco, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
Sacramento State will next be in action on Feb. 10 as it travels to Cheney, Wash., to take on Eastern Washington at 1 p.m.
