MEN’S TENNIS OPENS CONFERENCE PLAY WITH VICTORY OVER NORTHERN ARIZONA

2/17/2006

PHOENIX – Sacramento State won the doubles point and Junaid Hossain, Gabriel Loredo and Ramon Perez each picked up singles victories on the way to a 4-3 win over Northern Arizona in a Big Sky Conference men’s tennis match Friday afternoon at the Phoenix Tennis Center.

With the victory, Sacramento State improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Big Sky. Northern Arizona, which lost to the Hornets in last year’s Big Sky Tournament semifinals, dropped to 3-8 and 1-2 in the conference.

Sacramento State began the match by sweeping all three doubles contests to gain the important doubles point. The tandems of Hossain/Loredo (No. 1), Warwick Foy/Perez (No. 2) and Hague Van Dillen/Paul Komorniczak (No. 3) each won handily.

Hossain, who has played every match this year as the Hornets’ No. 1 singles player, knocked off the Lumberjacks’ Gareth Ducray, 6-3, 6-1. Hossain is now 3-1 in both singles and doubles matches this year. Loredo easily handled Jeff Morys, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 singles spot and Perez knocked off Casey Ross, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4.

Sacramento State will return to action next Friday, Feb. 24, when the team travel to Saint Mary’s for a 3 p.m. match.
