ALBUQUERQUE - The Sacramento State men''s tennis team won the doubles point and took the top three singles matches to claim a 4-3 win over Illinois State, Friday evening at a match hosted by New Mexico.The win evened the Hornets'' record at 1-1. The Redbirds dropped to 0-2.
The Hornets won two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Junaid Hossain and Gabriel Loredo won 8-5 at No. 1. Sacramento State also claimed a win at No. 3 where Thomas Morton and Ramon Perez defeated Alban Renard and Daniel Tobar, 10-8.
In singles play, Hossain knocked off Renard, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the top singles match. Loredo made quick work of Yohan Nograbat, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2. The team''s final win came at No. 3 where Warwick Foy defeated Nuno Jacinto, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Illinois State nearly staged a comeback with three victories at the bottom of the ladder. Uskokovic beat Perez, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4. Luka Marinkovic beat Hague Van Dillen, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 and Oscar Beich ground out a three-set win over Morton, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
Sacramento State will next play at UC Davis on Feb. 11.
