HARBATSIUK SET FOR FIRST ROUND MATCHUP IN NCAA MEN'S TENNIS SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY

5/26/2010

ATHENS, Ga. - Sacramento State junior Kiryl Harbatsiuk will compete in the first round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday, May 26 at 1 p.m. PDT. Live video of the match is available by clicking here.

Harbatsiuk was recently named the Big Sky MVP for the second straight season, and first team all-conference for the third consecutive year after completing arguably the best season in school history. He is currently riding a school-record 25-match singles winning streak despite being the team’s No. 1 player. He has gone 26-1 in dual play with his only loss coming in a third-set super tiebreaker to seventh-ranked Stanford’s Alex Clayton on Jan. 23. Harbatsiuk was ranked as high as 40th in the nation at one point during the season, and the native of Minsk, Belarus is the first Hornet to appear in the singles tournament on the men's side.

His opponent, Marcelo Arevalo of Tulsa, enters the match ranked No. 42 in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, and has an 8-6 record so far in his freshman campaign. When the Hornets squared off with the Golden Hurricane during the regular season, on Feb. 5 in Tulsa, the two did not play against each other, although Harbatsiuk defeated Arevalo's teammate Ashley Watling, who was ranked No. 21 at the time, in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
