JASON SMITH NAMED BIG SKY MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
OGDEN, Utah — Sacramento State’s Jason Smith has been named the Big Sky Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for matches played from March 10-18.
Smith, a native of Davis, Calif., helped Sacramento State extend its winning streak to eight-consecutive matches by going undefeated in singles and doubles play last week. The Hornets picked up two conference wins over Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado, and defeated UT Arlington.
Against Northern Arizona and UT Arlington on Saturday, the freshman went 2-0 in both singles and doubles and did not drop a set during the team’s two matches. Smith beat NAU’s Robin Pezzuto 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 singles and also teamed with Artur Klimenka for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. Smith then recorded a 6-1, 6-3 win in singles and an 8-2 doubles victory against Texas-Arlington.
The Hornets defeated the Bears 6-1 on Monday and Smith beat Jordan Boecker 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 singles. Earlier, Klimenka and Smith added another win to their record with an 8-1 decision over Boecker and Andy Green at the No. 2 doubles spot.
Individually, Smith has now won his past four singles matches and six of his past seven. The freshman has not dropped a set in the four-match streak and has won 48 of the 54 games. He has also won his past seven doubles matches.
Smith is the first Hornet men’s tennis player to be named Big Sky Player of the Week in 2009. The team currently owns the league’s best record at 9-4.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Boise State Spring Break Invitational on March 27-28.
