4/9/2007
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men’s tennis did not drop a set on its way to a 7-0 win over Pacific, Monday afternoon at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club. The win improved the 73rd-ranked Hornets to 16-4 overall and gave the team its 12th win its last 13 matches. The only loss during that span came at the hands of 19th-ranked Boise State. Pacific fell to 2-15.
Sacramento State jumped to an early 1-0 lead by winning all three doubles matches. Warwick Foy and Tim Lantin defeated Maros Blaha and Ahad Ebrahim, 8-1, at No. 3. Xavier Barajas-Smith and Hague Van Dillen clinched the point at No. 2 with an 8-3 win over Robert Price and Pedro Toledo. The No. 1 match also ended at 8-3 when Gabriel Loredo and Anton Stryhas downed Vegerd Veskimagi and Alan Kelly.
The Hornets also dominated singles play, never losing more than four games in the 12 sets. Barajas-Smith put the team ahead, 2-0, with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Veskimagi at No. 2. Lantin followed with a 6-2, 6-1, victory at No. 5 over Price. Loredo kept the momentum going at No. 3 where he downed Kelly, 6-1, 6-1.
The deciding point came at No. 4 where Foy knocked off Chase Oliphant, 6-4, 6-0. Miguel Camino earned his first win of the season with a 6-2, 6-2, victory against Blaha at No. 6. The final match to be decided was at the top of the ladder where Stryhas held off Moritz Starke, 6-3, 6-3.
The match was the final regular season home contest for Sacramento State this season. The team will next play at UC Davis on Friday, Apr. 13. That match will have major implications for the Causeway Cup. Sacramento State currently trails UC Davis but could take the lead with a victory over the Aggies.
The Hornets will also host the 2007 Big Sky Conference Tournament from Apr. 27-29 at the Gold River Racquet Club. Sacramento State has already clinched the top seed for the tournament. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
