MEN’S TENNIS DROPS ANOTHER 4-3 HEARTBREAKER, FALLING TO PORTLAND

GOLD RIVER, Calif. - For the third-straight day, the Sacramento State men’s tennis team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision, this time against Portland, Sunday afternoon at Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center. With the loss, the Hornets drop to 8-9 on the season. Friday, Sacramento State fell to Big Sky Conference rival Montana State 4-3, and yesterday to San Francisco. The Pilots claimed the advantage in the match by winning the doubles point as the teams split the six singles matches. The teams played the singles matches first and after the split, played the doubles to determine the winner.

In singles play, senior Joakim Rydberg got the Hornets on the board at the one with a 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 win over Matthew Loucks. At the two, junior Thomas Morton fell to Roman Borvanov, 6-0, 6-1. Junior Juniad Hossein fell in his match to James Redpath, dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision at the three. At the four, senior Peter Farkas won his match over Alex Strom, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. At the five, sophomore Warwick Foy won for the second-consecutive day as he won a hard fought win over Colby Jager, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. At the six, sophomore Ramon Perez dropped his match to Scott Kennel, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.

Portland then proceeded to win two of the three doubles matches to claim the point and the match win. At the one, the Hornet duo of Rydberg and sophomore Assad Malik fell to Loucks and Redpath, 8-3. At the two, Hossein and Farkas teamed up for the first time this season and came away with an 8-6 wom over Jager and Kennel. The match was to be decided at the three where Foy and Perez lost a heartbreaker, 8-5, to Borvanov and Strom.

Sacramento State returns to action next Sunday, Apr. 10 as the Hornets travel to La Jolla, Calif. to face UC San Diego. This will be the first meeting in school history between the Hornets and the Div. II Tritons. First serve at RIMAC Courts is set for 2:30 p.m. PDT.
