3/23/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- The Sacramento State men’s tennis team earned a pair of wins over Big Sky Conference opponents earlier this week. The Hornets won at Idaho State, 5-2, on Sunday, March 20, before returning home to defeat Eastern Washington, 7-0, on Monday, March 21. The victories, coupled with a win over Weber State on Saturday, capped a three-day sweep for Sacramento State.

Against Idaho State, the Hornets earned the doubles point with victories from Peter Farkas and Warwick Foy at No. 2 and from Ramon Perez and Juaiad Hossain at No. 3. In singles play, Hossain defeated Ivan Moferdin, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, to win at No. 1. Foy downed Alex Danilkovich, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 and Farkas beat Pablo Garces, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (5) at No. 4. The team’s last point came at No. 6 where Perez defeated Jemre Okoh, 6-2, 6-2.

Monday, Sacramento State had little trouble against the Eagles. The Horents cruised through doubles play, winning all three points. Matt Jones and Farkas teamed at No. 1 for an 8-1 win. Foy and Michael Thomsen also won 8-1 at No. 2 while William McAllister and Perez won 8-4 at No. 3.

Jones moved to No. 1 in single competition and defeated Brian Garfield, 6-1, 6-2. Thomas Morton earned a 6-4, 6-0 win over Patrick Millican at No. 2 and Foy defeated Andrew Cohoe, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3. The straigh-set onslaught continued in the bottom half of the lineup where Farkas downed Keithan Gregg, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4. Perez picked up a 6-0, 6-2, decision against Andrew Heier at No. 5 and Thomsen completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kevin Erickson.

The men next return to the court on Thursday, March 24, against New Orleans. The match against the Privateers is slated to begin at noon at Rio Del Oro. However, expected rain could move the match to SpareTime Indoor Courts in Gold River, Calif.
