MEN’S TENNIS PUTS SCARE INTO

ATHENS, Ga. –The Sacramento State men’s tennis team gave No.8 Georgia all they could handle before dropping a heartbreaker to the Bulldogs, 5-2, Wednesday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 2-4 while the Bulldogs improve to 7-2.Georgia opened the day by sweeping all three doubles matches to win the point. At the one, junior Juniad Hossein and sophomore Joakim Rydberg fell to John Isner and Antonio Ruiz, 8-2. At the two, seniors Peter Farkas and Matt Jones fell to Colin Purcell and Strahinja Bobusic, 8-2. At the three, sophomores Warwick Foy and Ramon Perez fell to Ricardo Gonzalez and Matic Omerzel, 8-2.
In singles action, Jones dropped his match at the one to Isner, 6-3, 6-2. Jones is now 2-3 on the season. At the two, Hossein lost a tough 6-4, 6-4 match to Ruiz. Rydberg finished out the match with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Bobusic, at the three. At the four, Perez dropped a tough 6-1, 6-3 decision to Purcell. Foy dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to Gonzalez at the five. At the six, Farkas claimed the first point of the day as he dispatched Trevor Wilson, 7-6, 6-3. Farkas is now 3-3 on the year.
“We started out nervous in doubles play, however, after we had a talk (at the break), the guys really focused,” said head coach Sherif Zaher. “The guys who lost early then went and vocally supported Joakim and Peter to their wins. To get two singles’ wins from a top-10 team will help give us confidence in fighting towards a Big Sky (Conference) championship."
Sacramento State returns to action on Friday as the Hornets continue their run in the Peach State by taking on Georgia State. First serve against the Panthers is set for 11 a.m. PST in Atlanta.
