ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Sacramento State men’s tennis won the doubles point, then managed to split the singles matches and hold on as the Hornets defeated New Mexico State, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the University of New Mexico Tennis Center in Albuquerque. With the win, the Hornets improve to 2-2 while the Aggies fall to 2-7.The Hornets started the day by winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the point. At the one, junior Juniad Hossein and sophomore Joakim Rydberg fell to Ben Archer-Clowes and Danilo Zivanovic, 9-8. At the two, sophomores Warwick Foy and Ramon Perez defeated Luis Avila and Jeff Pfeifer, 8-6. Sacramento State claimed the doubles point at the three where seniors Matt Jones and Peter Farkas defeated Stjepan Beg and Jorge Williams, 9-7.
In singles play, Jones improved to 2-1 on the year, as Archer-Clowes retired due to an ankle injury, 4-0, at the one. Hossein fell to 0-3 on the year with a 6-2, 7-6 loss to Zivanovic, at the two. Perez fell his match at the three to Beg, 6-4, 6-1. Junior Thomas Morton dropped a tough match at the four, falling toWilliams, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6. Foy improved to 3-1 as he won his match over Avila, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, at the five. At the six, Farkas easily dispatched Pfeifer, 6-1, 6-2.
Sacramento State returns to action tomorrow against New Mexico at the UNM Tennis Center. First serve against the Lobos is set for 1 p.m. PST.
