MEN’S TENNIS DROPS SEASON OPENER TO CAL POLY, 4-3

2/6/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men’s tennis team tried to rally after losing the doubles point, however, their quest for victory fell one point short as the Hornets were defeated by Cal Poly, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club, in the season opening match. The Hornets fall to 0-1 while the Mustangs improved to 2-4.

Cal Poly started the day by winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the point. At the one, senior Peter Farkas and sophomore Warwick Foy fell in their match to David Jones and Travis Crawford, 8-3. At the two, junior Junaid Hossein and sophomore Assad Malik fell in their match to Brett Van Linge and Fred Dewitte, 9-8 (4), and clinched the point for Cal Poly. At the three, sophomores Ramon Perez and Will McAlister won their match over Matt Baca and Aaron Elbert, 8-2.

In singles play, Hossein, playing in his first match as a Hornet after redshirting last season after transfering from Oregon, fell to Baca, 6-4, 6-2, at the one. Junior Thomas Morton, playing in his first match for Sacramento State after transferring from Sonoma State, fell to Jones, 7-6, 6-3. Perez fell in his match to Dewitte, 6-0, 6-4, at the three, allowing Cal Poly to seal the win. At the four, sophomore Joakim Rydberg won his match over Van Linge, 6-2, 7-5. Foy won his match over Crawford, 6-2, 6-2, at the five. At the six, Farkas picked up the last Hornet point of the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Adrian Mardyks.

Sacramento State returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 12 as the Hornets play a rare home-road doubleheader as they travel across the causeway to take on rival UC Davis at 10:00 am. Last season, the Hornets defeated the Aggies 5-2. Sacramento State then will return to Rio Del Oro to take on Northern Colorado. It will be the first meeting in school history against the Bears.
